DIRECTIONS:
Please read the following information. Then analyze the advertisement and answer the following questions.
Advertisements are everywhere, even when you are not aware of it. Advertising has a very specific goal. That goal is to influence your brain and thoughts so that you decide that you either need or want to buy something. They are purposefully attempting to get inside your head. The best way not to be controlled or a slave to marketing is to understand how they do it.
Some advertisements and messages are very clear, however, some advertisements are very sneaky. They connect one image with another idea so that your brain connects the two ideas. For example, a soda company might connect a can of soda with a scene of people having a super fun party. Whenever you see a can of soda in the store, they are trying to make you think of having super fun party times.
Commercials with a direct message are overt. For example, a commercial that says we are making food with organic ingredients is a direct message. Advertising that shows a guy eating a product and then being able to solve the world's hardest math problem contains an implied message that eating this specific food makes you smarter. These types of claims are illogical propositions. They make wild, sometimes funny, claims that go way beyond what the product is capable of doing.
Key Vocabulary:
claim - a statement that something is a fact.
overt - open to view, not hidden or concealed
implied - to suggest without directly stating
illogical - senseless or unreasonable
proposition - making a suggestion to be considered
